Phulera Dooj: The Festival of Flowers & New Beginnings

‘Phoolera’ with the term itself, you can understand what it means. But if you did not still get it, then it means ‘flowers.’ So, Phulera Dooj is the festival of flowers, which usually comes between the events of Vasant Panchami and Holi.

This year, in 2025, we will celebrate it on the 1st of March, 2025, on Saturday. As per the Hindu Panchang, the festival falls on Dwitya Tithi, which is the second lunar day of Paksha of Phalgun Mas.

The right time for the divine celebration is 3:16 AM on 1st March 2025, to 12:09 AM on 2nd of March 2025.

Why is फूलेरा दूज so special in Hindu Traditions?

The festival of flowers is dear to our beloved deity, Lord Krishna. It is believed that Lord Krishna prepares for Holi on this day, spreading flowers and love everywhere. As per the name, Phulera means Phool and dooj means the second day of the month.

Flowers are the prime element for this divine celebration, and the festivity marks the beginning of Holi in many places. During this time, you will see that many Radha Krishna temples are decorated, which symbolizes the love between Radha Krishna and showcases how Krishna played Holi with Radha and how he also used to tease her.

This pleasant time is considered the best for holding any of the auspicious ceremonies, like the wedding, Mundan, or ring ceremonies. Because at this particular time the planetary alignment is well designed and is considered a शुभ मुहूर्त for contemplating शुभ ceremonies.

The Story Behind Phulera Dooj

It was that once upon a time, Lord Krishna was busy for a long time and he was unable to meet Radha (the love of Lord Krishna). So, Radha became sad and it hurt nature, due to which all the greenery started falling. When Krishna noticed it, he went to meet Radha; as a result, Radha Rani was pleased and all the greenery developed again.

Watching this transformation happening, Lord Krishna plucked a flower from the greenery and threw it on Radha. Radha also threw flowers on Krishna and the festivity of flowers started then, pointing to Radha and Krishna’s eternal love for each other.

That time was Falgun and Holi of flowers started everywhere. Since then, this day has been celebrated by the Krishna and Radha devotees everywhere as Phulera Dooj. Many people also marry on this day because the day is itself the celebration of the love of Radha Krishna.

People do bhajans, kirtans, and chant this day and also sing devotional songs and prayers of Radha Krishna.

What You Must Do On This Day?
Offer Prayers & Worship

Do worship and pray to Lord Krishna, honoring the deity. It could be the bhajans you sing, the mantras you chant, or simply doing silent meditation. The goal is to connect with the lovable Radha Krishna. Offer marigolds and light up ghee lamps while doing puja.

Observe the Fast

Some people also observe the fast on this day as a religious vow or to cleanse one’s inner aura to connect with the deity effectively. You can also keep the partial fast in which the fasters only eat fruits or also the whole day fast. You can also wear a Tulsi Mala this particular day when you observe fast.

Charity

Keep up the pure intentions, such as serving others or doing charity as well. Donate to the less fortunate; help someone in need. These things open the channel for good karma. Do offer clothes, food, or any other kind of necessity that the people need.

Worship Ancestors

People also worship and offer food to the ancestors at this particular point in time and offer clothes, food, and other things to the needy. This pleases the ancestors and they bless their family members with love and divine blessings.

Celebrate The Beauty Of Nature

Appreciate nature around you and the arrival of the spring season during this time. Spend some time outdoors, with family and friends too. People can also plant trees or flowers, which helps in bringing growth and prosperity in life. If possible, make flower rangoli too; Lord Krishna will love it.
